BUSMC Industrial Control Desk with Later Glass Top
Couldn't load pickup availability
A striking British industrial control desk originally manufactured by the British United Shoe Machinery Company (BUSMC) and dating from the mid-20th century, circa 1930s–1950s. This powerful piece began life as a motor control and operator station within a working shoe factory, where it housed the electrical systems used to start, stop and regulate heavy industrial machinery.
Constructed from heavy-gauge pressed steel, the cabinet retains its original deep red industrial paintwork, now beautifully aged with authentic factory patina. Scuffs, abrasions and tonal variation across the surface speak to decades of real-world use on the factory floor, giving the piece a strong visual presence and genuine historical character.
The front panel features its original cast metal motor starter plate with raised “STARTET” lettering and period safety instruction advising operators to “ISOLATE BEFORE ADJUSTING” — a rare surviving detail that anchors the piece firmly in Britain’s industrial heritage.
BUSMC played a central role in mechanising the British footwear industry throughout the early and mid-20th century, supplying factories across Northamptonshire, Leicestershire and Yorkshire with the machinery that powered mass shoe production. Pieces like this would have stood alongside leather presses, stitching machines and moulding units, operated daily by skilled machinists and engineers.
Now thoughtfully repurposed with a later black glass top, this cabinet functions beautifully as a statement desk, studio console or retail counter, offering a smooth contemporary working surface while preserving the raw industrial character of the original steel base. The accompanying chair is not included in this sale.
A rare and visually powerful piece that combines practical modern use with deep historical narrative.
Condition
Structurally solid and heavy, as expected from industrial-grade steel construction. The surface shows visible age-related wear including paint loss, surface marks and factory patina consistent with decades of use. These features are considered part of the piece’s authenticity and industrial character. The black glass top is a later addition and is in good clean condition.
