A superb and highly sculptural studio pottery table lamp by celebrated British ceramic artist Bernard Rooke, dating to the late 1960s or early 1970s.

This is a powerful and authentic example of Rooke’s brutalist lighting designs, combining hand-built ceramic construction with deeply incised abstract relief decoration and richly textured volcanic-style surfaces. The lamp features a dramatic rounded form with porous lava-like earthenware sides, contrasted by a central glazed relief panel in deep blue-green tones.

The tactile, architectural surface treatment and symbolic incisions are unmistakably characteristic of Rooke’s Suffolk studio production during the height of the British brutalist movement. The form is bold yet balanced — equally sculptural when unlit and atmospheric when illuminated.
