Ingmar Relling Flex Safari Rosewood Folding Chair for Westnofa

A rare and highly desirable example of Norwegian modernism, this Flex Safari chair was designed by Ingmar Relling for Westnofa in the 1960s. It remains one of the most distinctive and sculptural expressions of lightweight, ergonomic Scandinavian seating.

Constructed from beautifully sculpted rosewood, the frame displays flowing, angular legs and refined curved arms that demonstrate Westnofa’s exceptional mastery of Scandinavian woodworking. The timber has been professionally polished in our workshop, enhancing the rich tonal depth and dramatic grain of the rosewood.

The chair retains its defining architectural character: a foldable frame paired with a suspended sling construction. The tensioned canvas back threads directly through the structure — an elegant and honest expression of load-bearing design. The original leather arm pads have been replaced with brand new real leather in a warm tan tone, and the chair has been fully reupholstered in high-quality green Harrison tweed with new foam, ensuring exceptional comfort while remaining sympathetic to the period aesthetic.

Unlike many of Relling’s more static lounge designs, the Flex Safari was conceived as a collapsible piece — neatly folding for transport or storage. This portability nods to campaign furniture traditions, while remaining unmistakably Scandinavian in restraint and proportion.

An increasingly scarce rosewood example in restored condition, offering both design pedigree and relaxed functionality.
