Scheurich Keramik West German Fat Lava Floor Vase

A striking and highly decorative 1960s Scheurich Keramik floor vase, model 239-41, produced in West Germany during the height of the Fat Lava movement.

This tall cylindrical form showcases Scheurich’s iconic volcanic brown glaze, richly speckled and layered, with bold geometric relief decoration in contrasting cream tones. The textured surface and architectural patterning create a sculptural presence, typical of the expressive West German ceramics that defined late mid-century interiors.

The underside retains its original impressed factory marks:

SCHEURICH-KERAMIK 239-41 W. GERMANY

A superb example of the earthy, tactile aesthetic that made West German pottery internationally influential during the 1960s and 1970s.

Design Context

Scheurich Keramik was one of the largest and most important ceramic producers in West Germany during the post-war modernist period. While mass-produced in scale, the company’s experimental glazes and bold relief patterns positioned it firmly within the broader Fat Lava movement — a style characterised by volcanic textures, dramatic contrasts and architectural forms.

These pieces were designed to sit directly on the floor, complementing low teak sideboards, rosewood interiors and the emerging brutalist aesthetic of the era.

Authentic West German examples stamped “W. Germany” were produced prior to reunification in 1990 and remain increasingly collectible.
