These rare and beautiful Saharan folios originate from a 19th-century Arabic prayer book, likely from Niger or Chad. Each folio, meticulously crafted on paper, features five lines of bold black Sudani script, with vocalisation marked by dots in red, green, and yellow to denote Hamza. Marginal words are elegantly written in sepia, adding to the folios' striking appearance. Dated to the 19th century, these pieces provide an extraordinary glimpse into the Islamic tradition as expressed within the Saharan regions and stand as significant artefacts of Islamic manuscript art.
The folios are framed in a striking golden picture frame that allows the manuscript to be appreciated from both side. So it can be freestanding on a mantlepiece or hung on a wall.
This set of folios is an ideal addition for collectors of Islamic art and manuscripts, presenting verses in praise of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) from the classical Islamic text Dala'il al-Khayrat by Muhammad al-Jazuli (d. 1465). The full name of the text is Dala'il Al Khayrat wa Shawariq Al-Anwar fi Dhikr al-Salat 'ala al-Nabi al-Mukhtar (The Guide to Goodness and the Advent of Blazing Lights in the Remembrance to ask for Blessings upon the Chosen Prophet). An example of the text from one of the folios translates as:
"From the day You created the world until the Day of Judgment, a thousand times each day... O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad, in countless numbers."
This captivating piece of history invites a deeper connection with devotional practices, making it both a powerful display piece and a cherished reminder of faith.
