An outstanding example of French craftsmanship, this monumental Henri II oak buffet à deux corps dates to the late 19th century and embodies the grandeur of Renaissance Revival design. At over 2.2 metres tall, it commands presence in any interior, combining architectural form, masterful carving, and ingenious joinery.
The upper cabinet features finely carved panelled doors with scrolling foliage and central cartouches, framed by turned columns. A balustrade gallery separates the top and bottom, originally intended to display prized ceramics or silver. The lower section offers two deep drawers and a pair of cupboard doors, richly panelled and equally well carved.
What sets this piece apart is its exceptional construction and rare design details:
A unique central locking system secures both drawers simultaneously - a sophisticated mechanism seldom found on period furniture.
The cabinet doors are ingeniously mounted with sliding metal retainers at each corner, eliminating the need for hinges or screws while ensuring lasting strength.
The buffet has been carefully stripped back by hand and refinished with clear wax, revealing the beauty of the oak grain and creating a lighter, more contemporary finish while retaining its historic integrity.
This is more than furniture: it is a functional work of art, representing both the skill of French cabinetmakers and the enduring elegance of Renaissance-inspired design. Its proportions, craftsmanship, and distinctive features make it a rare collector's piece, equally suited to period interiors or as a dramatic focal point in a modern setting.
