20th Century Georgian Revival Corner Writing Desk & Matching Tub Chair by J. Sydney Smith

A finely made corner kneehole writing desk with matching tub desk chair, crafted by J. Sydney Smith of Otley in the late 1980s to mid-1990s. Designed to nest perfectly into a corner, this desk offers an elegant space-saving solution for studies, library rooms, home offices, or reading corners.

The desk is finished in mahogany veneer with solid hardwood drawer internals, and features a leather skiver writing surface with gilt-tooled borders. The drawers are well constructed with machine-cut dovetails, solid timber runners and brass Georgian-style bail handles - a strong indication of quality pre-outsourcing UK cabinetmaking.

The accompanying tub desk chair echoes Sheraton influences, with shaped back splat, turned legs and carved arm terminals, and includes its original drop-in upholstered seat. The desk comes with its original key.

Historical Context

This suite belongs to the Georgian Revival movement that remained highly popular through the mid-to-late 20th century. J. Sydney Smith was a respected Yorkshire Dales maker known for producing traditional furniture with authentic construction methods during a period when many workshops moved toward cheaper manufacturing. These pieces represent the final era of regionally-made English cabinetry before production shifted overseas.
